LORDS OF THE LAST BENCHES by Julian D
published in CANADA
The author has fond memories of his dad's home in Parra, Bardez. Goa.

“It amazes me to think that Julian D dared to enter the mind of a child to articulate the everydayness of life from there...and yes, he succeeded rather well in coming up with tit bits of wisdom for ‘children’ of all ages. Our adult-erated world needs to listen and be healed by the voices of innocence.”
Peter Gonsalves.
Clothing for Liberation: A Communication Analysis of Gandhi’s Swadeshi
Revolution,

It is fascinating and exciting to be a part of a group that is in touch with their inner child.
As a social worker and self publishing author it is our inner child that brings about curiosity and creativity. As a child we played with a number of toys. Now as adults we are no different. We have our tablets, blackberry, readers and laptops. We tell our stories; we share our stories and live by our stories. The book LORDS OF THE LAST BENCHES by Julian D is a collection of short stories that bring us back in touch with our inner child.
For various reasons we have isolated our inner child (the Lord) to the last benches of our lives. The book helps us peel of the adult layers that obstruct brilliance.
Welcome on this ongoing journey of discovering the Champion in Us.

Teotonio in his own words : I do, however, owe an open apology to our former Portuguese colonizers. My early writings were too harsh on them and I tended to attribute to them more evils than those for which they may have been responsible. My feelings of hostility directed against the present-day descendants of the colonizers were certainly misplaced. However, I wish that they will understand it as my over-reaction to my own past and not entirely to theirs.
In the process of two decades of research and closer personal contacts with the Portuguese helped me to realise that there were our well-wishers among them, while many enemies of our people came also from within. This continues to be the reality till date. Some of my writings, including a couple of essays in this book, illustrate this point.
Positively, we owe it to the Portuguese to have exposed us to the wider world much earlier than many other people of our country and subcontinent. This does not apply only to the Christians of Goa, though these are at times mistakenly and maliciously regarded by some communally-biased political interests as the chief beneficiaries and even collaborators of the former colonial masters. Many of my writings, starting with Medieval Goa have thoroughly proved the contrary had often been true.

He begins with an anti- portuguese and anti- church mindset and then tries to analyse the portuguese presence with such a mindset. For this , he tries to create a myth of great goan grandeur before the Portuguese landed and even during their presence. The fact is that Goa is what it is, because of the portuguese - good or bad. Otherwise, just move outside Goa all along the Konkan coast and you find nothing. The historian will aprreciate that all along the Konkan Coast there is nothing great in terms of history, culture and trade and commerce. This seems to be the tragedy of this historian.

This is a very good review of the status of book publishing in Goa. But I would enlarge it to say the status of 'reading habit' in Goa; Ultimately publishing would pick up only if reading habit is nurtured. I would like to raise a point here, that the most famous reading facility in Goa, which probably is the first library in India (after one in Calcutta), the Central Library has idiotic timings for people to access. It is run like a government office, from 9 to 6 o'clock daily with half day holiday on Saturday and full day on Sunday. It also follows all government holidays and strikes, bunds and rest of the democratic holidays. Does this mean that working people should be discouraged from reading?

Could something be done about this?

Lino Leitao to me Is more than just a writer. He was a man I always looked up to. I haven't read his novel or most of his stories. I think I just read one about 'Xemai' and enjoyed the bitter sweetness of it.

Peter Nazareth puts it rightly when he says "It was his knowledge, his understanding of people, politics and history, his empathy for human beings and his thirst for ending oppression that made him a good writer."

Tio Lino always encouraged me to talk to people and write stories, which led me to write and to take up Journalism. He always believed in me and pushed me to be the best I could be. We had so many conversations while we munched on 'Caju Beebe' cashew nut, in Varca, his native village.

I miss him dearly and whenever I write something, I believe he is somewhere watching me, smiling:)

I am his Grand Niece Claire:)
